Scarlet- Marissa Meyer

My Rating: 4 Stars

Description: The fates of Cinder and Scarlet collide as a Lunar threat spreads across the Earth...
Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She's trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

My Thoughts: Again, Marissa creatively retells a beloved fairy tale in an amazing way. She took the short story of Red Riding Hood and made it into an epic adventure. I am still reeling from the way this book ended.

I would have given this book five stars if it were not for influx of POV characters. Half the time I did not know that Cinder or Kai were speaking until a ways into their scene.

I would like to also warn people that this book is, by far, more graphic than the first. It is hard to explain this without giving it away so here is a spoiler: Some characters are violent, killing by biting throats and doing so without mercy. These are some of the Luna's warriors shown in the first book. There, you have been warned.

  1. Right now, I think I'll wait on 'Scarlet' (at least until 'Cress' comes out). But while I've heard this is a cliff-hanger, can one read 'Cinder' without dying to read 'Scarlet'?

I have to wonder if 'Cress' will be a twist on 'The Princess and the Frog', and if 'Winter' will be a twist on 'The Snow Queen'...

    1. I was able to wait for Scarlet until I got it from the library, it was a cliff hanger, but I believe you could do it.

As to the stories, I read something on goodreads that said Cress would be Rapunzel and and Winter would be Snow White. I am not sure if that is true, but it is what I am thinking.
